Splashpointjazz Club – JANUARY 2019

SPJC Newsletter  JANUARY 2019

We are very pleased to provide details of Splashpoint Jazz Clubs up and coming events for January 2019.  To book please see details under each venue and date.

We’ve hardly had time to bid Christmas 2018 a fond farewell than we’re already gearing up to wish you a VERY HAPPY 2019! And we’ve got some super gigs lined up for you in January, as you will see from the details below.

There are some significant changes around the Splash Point clubs though, so please read carefully as we don’t want any of you turning up at the wrong time or on the wrong day. Or both! ……..

JANUARY 2019

ALFRISTON

Deans Place Hotel Alfriston is the perfect place to start off the New Year!

Tuesday 1st January, New Year’s Day lunch 12.30 – 3pm. Fiery jazz duo Neal Richardson and Andy Drudy (guitar) start the month and the year in fine style.

Book a table on 01323 870248.

If you’re a teeny bit hungover from the night before and you can’t make the 1st, you can catch Neal’s solo piano/vocal gig at Dean’s Place on Sunday 6th  instead, at 12.30pm onwards,……… We quite understand!

SEAFORD (note change of day & time!!!)

FIRST GIG IS WEDS 2nd JANUARY at The View, Seaford Head Golf Club

Splash Point Jazz Club SEAFORD remains at the lovely View (Seaford Head Golf Club) but there is a change of day and time. From January the club will run on the FIRST WEDNESDAY of each month, with the music starting at 7pm. Come for dinner if you wish (call 01323 890139 to reserve a table) or just come to listen, with maybe a glass of something on the side. We’ve booked some of the finest jazz players in the UK to play alongside Neal’s Trio – and the first of 2019?

Wed 2nd January: our special guest will be the inimitable Alex Garnett on tenor, the house-band leader at Ronnie Scott’s. He’s a great musician and he also sings a bit (sometimes. If we ask him nicely.) He’ll be with Neal on piano (he also sings a bit!), Nigel Thomas (bass) and Phil Crabbe (drums) correct at the time of writing.

Loads of free parking at the venue: The View, Seaford Head Golf Club, Southdown Road, BN25 4JS. Tickets are £10, buy on the door on the night or in advance from WeGotTickets.com (booking fee applies).

BRIGHTON MARINA

Splash Point gigs at The Master Mariner, BRIGHTON MARINA (BN2 5WD) are going to once a month, with a revised start time of 7.30pm. If you haven’t already been there this is a great venue, complete with grand piano, a new and exciting bar menu, and a warm and relaxed ambience. First for 2019 is:

Thurs 10th January: Fantastic vocalist Sara Oschlag will be the special guest, with Neal on piano, George Trebar (bass) and Chris Gwilt (drums).

Entry to the Master Mariner is FREE, so no need to rush to the cashpoint first. Just turn up and you’ll be very welcome.

(Acoustic Fridays at the Master Mariner have been suspended for the time being, we’ll update you on this when things change)

EASTBOURNE

Our Eastbourne jazz club, at The Fishermen’s Club, Royal Parade, BN22 7AA continues on the last Wednesday of the month.

Wed 30th January: The Nigel Price Organ Trio, with special guest Vasilis Xenopoulos (tenor). This is the band that won the Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Jazz Ensemble in 2010 – and since then they’ve toured extensively every year gaining more and more fans at each venue on their way round the UK. Nigel is currently the finest jazz guitarist in the UK, with the excellent Ross Stanley (organ) and  the equally excellent Steve Brown on drums. You’d expect to be wowed by the trio alone BUT for the same ticket price we are also throwing in super-sax star Vasilis. It’s a bargain, folks. Tickets are £10 – buy on the door on the night or in advance from WeGotTickets.com (booking fee applies).

The additional attractions of free parking right outside the door and drinks at club prices make this gig a Very Good Deal Indeed.

BATTLE

Also on the same night (yes, we know you have to make a choice here), is Splash Point Jazz Club Battle, at the Bull Hotel in the High Street, TN33 0EA.

Wed 30th January: Special guest with Neal is Jo Fooks (tenor sax), who hails from Scotland. So it’s appropriate (as this date narrowly misses Burns Night by a sporran’s whisker) that the food on this evening will be Scottish-themed.

The music at The Bull is free to diners and you are advised to book in advance to avoid disappointment. Call the lovely people there on 01424 775171.

HASTINGS

Neal’s lovely “Gin & Jazz” gigs recommence at Bannatynes Spa Hotel on Friday 4th Jan 7pm.  It’s free and a lovely Restaurant; book a table on 01424 851222

FEBRUARY 2019

EASTBOURNE: HYDRO HOTEL

And last but by no means least, for those of you who like to plan ahead, here’s a date for your diary: starting on Wed 13th February, and thereafter the second Wednesday of each month, Jazz @ the Hydro Hotel in Eastbourne will be offering a Jazz Tea, 3pm – 5pm, where Neal will be playing and singing, with a different guest each month 🙂

Book by phoning the hotel: 01323 720643. Find the divinely elegant Hydro at Mount Rd, Eastbourne BN20 7HZ.

And that’s it for the first month of this brand spanking new year.

We genuinely look forward to welcoming you to our jazz clubs, and hope to see you again very soon. Keep supporting live jazz in Sussex!
